If you read yesterday’s post before I woke up at 6:30 and questioned my math (Bunny birthed 6 kittens, Peter Cottontail passed away in the past few days, why do we only have 4 kittens?) – I failed to include the information that the last kitten born to Bunny was struggling as soon as s/he was born, and passed away within a few days.
I weighed the kittens last night, and despite the fact that I predicted Benjamin was the heaviest, Lola actually outweighs him by 2+ ounces. Their weights were (largest to smallest): Lola (15.3 oz), Benjamin (13 oz), Bugs (12 oz) and Honey (11.8 oz). They’re well within normal range for their age (the general rule of thumb is about 1 pound per month). They were tiny when they were born (weighing between 1.8 and 2.3 oz), so I’d say they’re doing well. I’ll weigh them daily and can always jump in with a supplementary bottle if need be.
I set up the litter boxes yesterday morning and put each of the kittens in one so they’d know it was there. Lola, Honey and Benjamin all looked sad and dejected and climbed right out, but Bugs practically put a bib around his neck and got out the spoon and fork. He went to TOWN on that litter, stuffing it into his cheeks like it was the finest stuff he’d ever tasted. Then he walked around the room p’tooie-ing pieces of litter all over the place.
(Kittens eat litter at first. They’re like humans babies in that everything goes into the mouth first; it’s how they learn. I use non-clumping litter in the small litter boxes, and by the time they make it to (and into) Mom’s big litter box across the room, they’ve stopped eating litter.)
(Speaking of kittens eating everything, the first thing these kittens did upon climbing out of the crate was go over to the floor and begin vigorously licking it. Guess it’s a good thing I don’t use harsh chemical cleaners on the floors!)
