8-18-12 – Rupert, RIP.

I’m sorry to tell y’all that Rupert, the white cat who showed up here in April and became one of our permanent outside cats, died on Thursday morning. Fred saw him before he left for work that morning, and then neither of us saw him again. When I realized, mid-morning on Thursday, that I hadn’t seen him, I started worrying. I looked in all his usual places and found him nowhere. This isn’t the first time he’s gone walkabout – he did it not long after he originally showed up – but I’ve become so accustomed to him always being either on the side stoop, under the side stoop, or hanging out on the steps of the blue coop, that it struck me as wrong and weird.

Yesterday afternoon Fred was walking around the property, checking all the outbuildings yet again, when he found Rupert in the ditch between our property and the church property next door. He’d pretty obviously been struck by a car and died instantly.

Fred buried him behind the back yard, where Rupert would hang out and keep us company when we were in the pool.

He wasn’t with us long, but he integrated with the outside cats (Maxi and Newt) so seamlessly that it seems like he’s always been with us. He will absolutely be missed.

  3. I saw on CB that Rupert was hit by a car and has gone to the bridge. I am so sorry that this happened. The mom here has many outdoor kitties over the years and know about the lose when they don’t come home. You will be in our thoughts and purrs.

  8. We are so sorry about Rupert. That is so sad he got hit by a car. I have lots of cats here that live outside and worry about them all the time, especially when they go on walk abouts. Just know, he was happy there with all of you or he wouldn’t have stayed. Sorry I met you in these sad times, but will be back. Looks like you have lots of cats and that you are my kind of people. Sending lots of purrs and prayers. Take care.

    I’m so sorry. I’m really sad and actually started to cry when I read about this on the Cat Blogosphere. There’s always a hole in our heart when we lose one of our pets. And, although, we always heal it never makes the next time any easier.

    I started reading your blog when Maggie and the McMaos were starring and I haven’t missed a day. The love that you and Fred have for all animals is so moving and the love you invest in the fosters and the permanent residents and outdoor kitties always makes me feel better about the world.

    Sorry that it took such a sad occasion for me to introduce myself. Hang in there!!! The pain WILL pass!!! Go kiss some kittens belly (and ears and nose and more belly) when it gets too tough. Thanks for giving Rupert so much love, I’m sure it will come back to you in some form!!!

  19. just happened to check for a weekend post and was saddened by this one, sooo sorry about Rupert. Echoes of the other comments–he had a great life with you there on Crooked Acres. They sure leave holes in our hearts!

  25. So very sad. He was such a cool, laid back little guy. Those that just “show up” are often the most loving and appreciative, and I am sure he knew he had found the best home a kitty could have!

Awww, so sorry to hear this 🙁 My husband and I live in the country and we have the local “all you can eat buffet” for strays and some of them think this is their permanent home (which we allow them to believe that), so it’s always hard when you see that one of them has been hit by a car…I can sympathize with you and I’m so sorry 🙁
