What type of wet wipes are you using? My older boy Tuxie is having problems keeping his ummm…”whiz biz” clean, and I have to wipe him down down there frequently. I’ve just been using wet paper towels, but he could stand to be a bit fresher.

I really like WaterWipes, which we buy several packs at a time at Walmart or Target. A lot of unscented wipes are not really (to my nose) unscented, but these don’t smell like anything at all. As a second choice, Costco sells (in bulk) some pretty decent unscented wipes that are nice and thick and – this is important to me, and something that isn’t true about the WaterWipe packs – you can pull them out of the package one at a time, and they don’t come in a clump, they pull out nicely one at a time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unrelated to the actual post today, but–in perusing yesterday’s Previously links, I was reminded that it’s been two years since Jake crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Which seems impossible, by the way, and his dear, loony little face is still sorely missed; as a long-time L&H reader, I knew him almost from the time I came to join the party, as it were, and Robyn always brought him so delightfully to life through her photos and stories.
Anyway, I also recently ran across this picture on a Tumblr blog I follow, and it made me smile so much that I wanted to share it with everyone here. (You don’t need a Tumblr account to see the post.) This fellow’s expression definitely reminds me of Jake–and his mustache also made me think, “Hey, it’s Puff/Hook’s loonier cousin!” LOL
I can TOTALLY see the resemblance there!
And both Fred and I realized recently that it had been two years since we said goodbye to Jake, and were very surprised. We both honestly thought it had been one year, not two.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As a foster mom, I can totally relate to this heartache. Did you take him home and bury him in your yard? I have a cemetery for my lost babies, feral or otherwise. They are never forgotten.

I had him cremated – to be honest, we’re running out of space to bury cats and kittens.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Would you say Nigel and Hazel are a bonded pair? Just curious.
I wouldn’t say that they’re a bonded pair – they don’t seek each other out, and they’re happy to play with whoever’s closest – but I wouldn’t be sad to see the two of them adopted together!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I wonder….How many [tummies] are traps? But so so tempting 🙂 and delightful

At this point, they will pretty much let you rub their bellies without the trap springing. That very well may change in the future!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was wondering how the kittens react to the lightning and thunder.
When the storm was at its loudest, they turned and looked at the window a few times, but for the most part they ignored it. Our permanent residents don’t really react to the storm either (although Khal got annoyed at us because he was on the screened porch when the rain came in sideways and he got wet. Obviously, it’s OUR fault!) – Newt used to let us know that a storm was coming by going to his favorite hiding place. In the previous house, that was the pantry; in this house, it was the closet in Fred office (we always left that door slightly ajar just for Newt.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So how are your cat herding skills? Do you roundup all the kitties when there is bad weather and get them in a shelter?

We do have a storm shelter in the back yard, and all the permanent residents and current fosters are easy to get into carriers… but we didn’t do that this time around just because we didn’t feel it was necessary. (In retrospect, yeah – we should have headed for the shelter! There were some pretty scary strong winds just a mile or two away, and I would have hated to be hanging out in the foster room only to have the roof blow away on us!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, yes – Tuesday evening there was severe weather (including a tornado) in our area, resulting in a loss of power (and extremely spotty cell service) for almost exactly 24 hours. And then once the power came back on, it kept occasionally going off for 10 – 15 seconds and then coming back on. As of yesterday afternoon, it seems to be behaving itself, thankfully.
We do not have a generator (and it’s not in the budget at the moment, but perhaps before the fall it will be), but managed pretty well. My main concern was the lack of hot water to make formula for Sebastian. The first bottle after the power went out was okay, because we still had some warm water in the pipes. The midnight feeding was less wonderful because I had put a container of water on the counter so that at least it wouldn’t be COLD, and His Majesty Prince Sebastian of the Sensitive Palate was NOT impressed (he prefers his formula juuust on this side of what I would consider too warm). I got him to take enough formula so that I didn’t think he’d fade away to nothing, at least. After that, I slept with a bottle of water in hopes that my body temperature would make it warm enough, and His Nibs was still not pleased. Then it was morning. We went to get a quick fast food breakfast, and when I fretted about how to warm formula for Sebastian, Fred offered his cup of coffee. So yes, I warmed Sebastian’s bottle of formula in a cup of coffee, and it worked surprisingly well.
And then I came up with the solution.
A glass dish of water suspended over a candle. It worked SHOCKINGLY well, took about half an hour to get the water hot, and in fact was so hot I had to cut it with a little cold water when I made his formula.
(Side note: you can probably guess that I drink neither coffee nor tea; I’m sorry to say that my blood is about 95% Diet Coke. I only cared about the lack of hot water for Sebastian’s sake. There was enough ice in the freezer that my Diet Cokes were perfectly cold all day long.)
Other than that, everything was fine – we both did a lot of reading, I hung out with the kittens for a long time, and there were many naps taken. In addition, the weather outside was very pleasant and there was a nice breeze, so we opened windows and left them open until early afternoon.
We have these LED camping lanterns, which worked perfectly. We also have what is probably an oddly high number of power banks for two people, so were able to keep our phones and Kindles charged.
All in all, honestly: it could have been much worse. (But we were also glad to have the power come back on!)
Food on the nose? Must be Monty!
“ROWR!” says Margarita. “I yam a fearsome beast!” Terrifying!
“It’s just me, lady,” she said reassuringly. “You don’t gotta be scared!”
Does Matilda need a kiss? I think yes!
Nigel’s regretting starting something with Margarita.
It’s a Benji loaf, is what it is. (My favorite!)
And a Margarita loaf! (My favorite!)
Benji takes a break from tussling with Matilda to show off his teef.
“Ooh,” says Nigel. “Where’d that ceiling fan come from?!”
A Hazel and her bunny (who, ironically, she was just bunny kicking!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sebastian is starting to look like a real kitten and less like a shapeless lump of cute!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A rare shot of all three permanent residents! (Khal in the lower right, Alice on the back of the recliner, and Charlie in the flower bed.)
Posted on social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/ Bluesky) recently.
We had bad weather come through our area last night – we are fine, but the power is out and cell service comes and goes. You’re on your own today, kids. I’m going to go cuddle this grumpy guy.
    I wonder what archeologists 2000 years from now will think when they dig up a pet cemetery in someone’s backyard…
      They’ll know that thousands of years after the Egyptians, we were still worshipping cats! 😉
    In Australia we have a small hiking stove called a Trangia. Very compact and uses methylated spirits to cook. Very handy in power failures.
    That ‘Tumblr kitty’ is so cute! I can see the Jake/ Puff/Hook connection, but he also looks like a negative image of the man on the Pringles can. I really miss seeing pics of Jake tuning his loons, and can’t believe it’s been 2 years either.
    Set a picture of Matilda, needing a kiss is a keeper. It took a lot of great photos, but that when I could see as a future banner.
    I had a whole house power surge protector installed last fall. I don’t want to deal w a generator but, every time we get severe weather – and we get severe weather A LOT – I like knowing that all the electronics and appliances are protected from a lightening strike. Of course, the house can still burn down, which is what happened Monday night about a half mile away, but you can’t have everything!
    With your “rare shot of all three permanent residents” I realize that I actually have more permanent residents than you do!! Never EVER thought that would happen!
    Gosh, two years since Jake. I would have guessed only a year too. Sure do miss his loony face.
    From someone else with multiple cats in tornado alley, the issue with wrangling them at my house is the timing. When the tornado went through St Louis a week ago, the time from when the sirens went off to the time that the danger was passed was less than 20 minutes. I can’t get all four of mine into carriers in that time. So, if we go to the basement, I do my best to entice them down with me (which is usually pretty successful since they want to be wherever I am), but other than that, I have to keep fingers crossed and pray.
    Only 3 permanent residents — that just seems crazy! Also — NIgel and the ceiling fan! ❤️ My ornj boy Teddy, who came to me in January when he was about 4, is very concerned about the ceiling fans. If you turn one on while he’s in the room, he runs and hides. If it’s already on, he gives it occasional concerned looks and once in a while decides to leave the room. I guess maybe his previous owner didn’t have ceiling fans, although that’s hard to believe since he came to me from Oklahoma, where I’m pretty sure that ceiling fans are as common as they are here in Texas…..
    “…His Nibs…” 😀 😀 😀
    That phrase always cracks me up; it’s not used often enough, imho, and so you made my day by using it here and so very, very aptly too.
    Glad all is intact and peaceful post-storm!
    Nova Scotia gets a lot of power outages due to weather. Years ago after Hurricane Juan, I bought a one burner butane stove. Its safe for using in the house and im still on my first canister. During the week long power outage of the hurricane, i set 15 tea lights in a baking pan with a grate on top to heat my soup. It does work in a pinch.
