If there’s one thing we can say about Cap’n Floof, it’s that he manages to make himself a home no matter where he is.

A quick video – this was actually shot a little less than a month ago, when the little Taters – Kennebec, Agata and Fianna – were still in the room upstairs. They’re all three very squeaky kittens when they’re suggesting that I pet them, clearly.

I love how Tommy and Spanky are laying in basically the same position.

The pictures of Tommy and the Floof are precious beyond words. OH!

My very first kitty was orange. Seeing all these orange ones brings back a lot of great memories. Thank you for being their “Mom” and letting us see them grow.

Duh – I meant to say thank you for being Mom to ALL the kitties not just the orange guys!

Did someone say it was the Fourth of July? For me all the fireworks will be celebrating the Cap’n Floof feature. (Rumor has it he’ll be getting a napground promotion to General )

Judging from the way he gets around (and yes, now I have “I get around, round, round, round, round, round, I get around” on the brain), the Cap’n probably sees himself as a citizen of the world! Happy Fourth, Robyn & Co.!

The Tommy and Cap’n Floof pics are adorable. And the video … I have an adult squeaker. My siamese/torti Anna has a squeak. I’m guessing that since her first weeks were with her feral momma, she and her sis didn’t learn about meowing. They are both really quiet, but have never really managed a full meow.

    1. ibby says:
      July 4, 2012 at 7:53 am

I had an all white deaf cat who didn’t know how to meow. He just had this kind of strangled HOWL. Kind of disturbing at first – but I loved him.

Absolutely cute pics of the Floof! Cap’n Floof! Makes me giggle everyday.

And today I have a question for your readers — what do you do when a cat starts peeing outside the box? My littlest (yet oldest) Pandora has begun peeing right by the front door of my apartment. She peed on a towel this weekend, and then this morning peed right on the rug. It’s always happened in the early morning(ish) as far as I can tell, but no other time.

I’m going to call the vet and see if I can get an appointment, as the last few times this has ever happened (when she was 3 and 9 yrs old) she had a UTI.

But any other suggestions in the meantime? Thanks πŸ™‚

    1. alyslinn says:
      July 4, 2012 at 7:55 am

I should note that the towel was right by the door also.

    2. admin says:
      July 4, 2012 at 8:24 am

If by any chance it’s not a UTI, I find that Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract litter helps refocus the cats on peeing in the litter box – but I should also add that I never leave anything soft (especially laundry) on the floor because my jerks will inevitably pee on it. In fact, on the rare occasion I leave something on the floor and it DOESN’T get peed on, I feel like I’ve won the laundry.

Actually, I just went back and reread your question – is it always in the same spot? If so, it sounds like she could be smelling the urine left behind which indicates to her that it’s a good place to pee. In which case I’d recommend cleaning the area with an enzymatic cleaner to get completely rid of the smell.

      1. alyslinn says:
        July 4, 2012 at 8:44 am

        Thanks Robyn πŸ™‚
I’ve taken up the rug that was there (it’s now sitting in my bathtub, away from any pee-ers), and I’m going to pick up some enzymatic cleaner for the rug. I sprayed the hardwood and cleaned it with Nature’s Miracle in the meantime.

Partly I wonder if she’s getting slightly freaked out because there’s been a cat next door who sits on their roof and peers into my place, or if the dog that lives upstairs from my apartment is doing some early morning snuffling round the door on his way out for walkies with his staff. All possible I suppose.

        1. Oldcat says:
          July 4, 2012 at 10:59 am

Perhaps the neighbor cat is spraying on the outside of the door and she is just responding to that. You might try cleaning the outside too.

My brain processed “won the laundry” as “won the lottery.” (Excellent pun, btw.) These days, honestly, I don’t know which would excite me more…

in the mean time put down more boxes. not peeing in the box means the box is associated with something that isn’t working for her. With UTI or cyrstals it is the pain of peeing. they don’t understand it is them that is painful (I’ve been peeing all my life it can’t be me) so they think it is the box. if you get some different boxes, she will probably give those a try too. Not a long term solution, but it should get you until you get to a vet. If it isn’t UTI or crystals then maybe something about the box is wrong to her and putting another one down will give her different options

also helping with UTI and crystals to lower her urinary PH to the ideal of 6.0-6.5 by feeding her a high animal based protein low plant based ingredient diet.will keep the bladder happy and keep crystals from forming. Hydrating is also important. I would be feeding a canned diet in pate form (not chunks or shreds) (or raw) mixed with some water to make a soup.

        Thanks Connie πŸ™‚
I’ll put out another box as close to the door as I can get, and hope that’ll help too.
She does eat a canned diet solely, Wellness grain-free (chicken & turkey). πŸ™‚

      July 4, 2012 at 11:30 am

Agree with taking her to the vet asap and cleaning the area, but one thing I have also found that helps to “redirect” a peeing kitty, is to put a dish of food on the newly cleaned formerly peeing spot. Cats won’t pee where they eat so that helps. Of course a food bowl in front of your door is annoying, but it would only be for a couple of days. Hope she feels and acts better soon!

      1. Noelegy says:
        July 4, 2012 at 3:10 pm

I’ll have to try that with Murphy, who has taken to peeing on the tiles in front of the back door. I’ll have to make sure that I keep the dogs away from it, though.

Long time lurker, first comment! Love your blog to bits, it’s my daily lunchtime reading while i sit at my desk and eat, excellent cute kitteny entertainment!

Wanted to comment to add a bit of feedback about the watermarks. Excellent idea, because the internet is very good at plagiarising. Have to say though, i find your watermarking very distracting purely because they move around the photos! If they were always in one corner at one size and colour, my eyes would get used to that and ignore it with every photo i look at. However, since they move, the watermark is the first and main thing i see every time i look at a photo.

Of course i realise that method still might suit you so not expecting you to change it, just thought i’d share, it won’t interfere with my enjoyment of the site and photos! πŸ™‚

Keep up the great work! πŸ˜€

I have to admit, I came to that conclusion myself this morning. I think I’m going to start sticking them in the lower left corner and call it good enough (and move it to the right if it interferes with the picture).

Nice to “meet” you, and thanks for reading! πŸ™‚

      1. Camilla says:
        July 4, 2012 at 10:35 am

Sounds like a good solution – and yes moving it when it actively gets in front of something uber-interesting would be wise. Hoorah. πŸ˜€

Nice to meet you too, shall endeavour to visit the comments from time to time, now i’ve broken the ice! πŸ™‚

Picasa – which is how I do my watermarking – puts it in one spot and makes it light or dark depending on the backgrould. So far it seems to work out fine with one size and just 2 colors.

        1. Catsy says:
          July 4, 2012 at 8:11 pm

You know if someone wanted to plagerize your photos they would just crop around your watermark.
Just sayin’. Your marks are not distracting to me at all. I wish I could take pics like you do!

          1. admin says:
            July 4, 2012 at 8:49 pm

Yeah, I know they will. I hit my “f this” limit today after spending hours trying to make the pics for tomorrow look like I wanted, and decided to discontinue the watermarking. πŸ™‚

          2. Camilla says:
            July 5, 2012 at 2:54 am

Luckily most of the ‘stealing’ that goes on is lazy stealing, as in someone takes the photo and can’t be bothered to make a note of the source or credit it. So watermarking would cover most of that. Active stealing would indeed be virtually impossible to prevent, agreed!

        2. Camilla says:
          July 5, 2012 at 2:55 am

That sounds like a good way of doing it! No effort required, perfect.

I kept expecting the photo essay to end with a orange floofball tumbling to the floor. Excellent balance, Cap’n. Nice job.

My foster babies are very quiet squeakers. I expect they’re just getting warmed up, though. Their breakfast routine this morning was noisier than the day before. I figure I’m a day or two away from climbing the pant leg while hysterically screaming about starvation.

    Love the dishwasher inspector. πŸ™‚

    1. admin says:

I think his floof is filled with helium and it keeps him in places other kittens would tumble from.

I think you’re absolutely right, give them a bit longer, and they’ll be screaming so loud you’ll have to wear earplugs!

(The dishwasher inspectors gave me demerits for my loading skillz. Hmph!)
