For this month’s Chewy.com product review, I chose Honest Kitchen treats. I’ve heard good things about Honest Kitchen and wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

We received a pack of the Smittens Pure Dehydrated Icelandic Haddock Cat Treats.

Ingredients? Dehydrated haddock. That’s all! And what did the cats think?

Alice, who is known to be picky, loved them. LOVED. THEM.

“Don’t be stingy, lady. Gimme more.”

Miz Poo took one sniff of the treats I put next to her, then gave me this baleful “You’re kidding, right?” look.

Sugarbutt gave one treat a try…

Then said “Nah. I’m good. Give these other two to Alice.” (So I did.)

Stefan thought they were excellent.

He also couldn’t be bothered to actually get up from his semi-reclined position to eat his treats.

“A+, would eat again.”

Dennis got all crazy-eyed, snatched that treat out of my hand.

And got super excited and drooly when I offered him another one.

Newt was interested in the fact that there were treats being handed out.

But he wouldn’t eat any. He’s probably our pickiest cat. I mean, clearly not starving, but picky.

When Jake learned there were treats to be had, he was halfway out of his Jake Cave before he’d even fully woken up.

He thought they were super duper awesomely good.

Then he got all loony-faced ’til I gave him a couple more.

Sheriff Mama was skeptical, as a Sheriff oughta be.

Then she tried one.

And ate them all.

Tommy licked one, decided he didn’t want it, and shoved it off his bed before I could even snap a picture. Brat.

So then I went upstairs to offer some to Simon & Garfunkel.

Simon said “Ooh, what’s this?”

Then he said “Yeah, no. I don’t think so.”

When he came down onto the floor, I offered him some again, and he looked at me like this and said “Did I not make myself clear? I’m not interested, lady. But thanks.”

Garfunkel gave ’em a sniff, and was likewise uninterested.

I gave it another try, held out a treat to him, and he looked interested.

I thought he was grabbing for the treat, but nope. He was grabbing for my hand. Which he pulled down so that he could rub his head on my hand, and encourage me to pet him. How sweet is that?

So, in summation some of them LOVED the treats, some of them thought the treats were okay, and a few of them were just not having it.

Thanks to Chewy for giving us the chance to try something new. In case it wasn’t clear, the Honest Kitchen Smittens Pure Dehydrated Icelandic Haddock Cat Treats were provided to us free of charge; the words and opinions are the cats’ as interpreted by me!

As ever it was the way of cats – Gimme!, Meh, & You will die soon. There are no other cat reactions.

This totally describes my cat Holly. She is very particular about what she will eat, but you’d never think it to look at her. She’s a bit chubby. Figaro, on the other hand, will eat pretty much anything but he never seems to gain any weight.

LOL, Dennis! What an expressive little face that boy has.

Again I ask – how is it you manage to get anything done when you have little funny faces like Stefan and Miz Poo and the whole bunch of them, not too mention kittens, around? I’d be hugging and squeezing and calling them George the whole day through.

(Speaking of George, how are the puppies doing?!)

The puppies are just fine, loving the cooler weather. I need to get out to the back forty with the camera for another Crooked Acres post!

I’m curious if Fred gave any to Archie and what his reaction was, if any?

Archie wasn’t around when I was handing out treats and snapping pictures – I imagine that he would have liked them, though, he is not a picky boy in the slightest!

Adorable post! I love when the “cats” post instead of you Robyn (no offense). Speaking of reviews, I know that you’ve done many about litter and that the readers have offered many opinions as well. I am looking for something specific though: Walmart used to carry a jug of Cat’s Pride Scoopable unscented CHEAP litter which suited us just fine. However, I have not been able to find it recently. I was wondering if there was a comparable litter that anyone knows of. I need UNscented and scoopable especially! I am currently using Companion which isn’t bad but a little dusty. TIA!

If you live in a area that has the Meijer grocery stores, they have a Meijer brand unscented scoopable that’s not bad.

I give my cats the dehydrated chicken for treats, as my older cat is diabetic and I have to watch what I feed him. They ADORE them.

      January 29, 2015 at 4:52 pm

I also have dehydrated chicken around here that I occasionally give them. Most of them love that, too!

Hey Robin, I need some cat advice and I hope I could ask the help of the wonderful Love and Hisses community. I’m sorry, but this will be a bit long.

Not quite two years ago, I took in two cats in an emergency situation from a truly horrible hoarding situation. Both cats had suffered a good deal of abuse and neglect. To give you an idea of the conditions, one cat was a five year old female, and the other a year old male- and he’s her great-great-grandson, and had already fathered kittens of his own. They went, separately, into the two small bedrooms of my townhouse. I had hoped they would be fosters, as I am mostly full up, but both cats had issues enough to make adopting them out unlikely.

The female, Kala, who had aggression issues and bad food allergies, has mostly come around, and is nearly at the point that she can be integrated into the household, though she’ll likely always be a bit cranky and reactive.

The male, Caliel, however, is a sweetheart in theory, but I suspect he’s never advanced past a kittenish mental age, and maybe never will. He can’t learn not to knock things over and break things. He can’t learn to play nicely with other cats, and wants to pounce on everyone to get to know them. I’ve tried harness training him, putting up gates for long periods of time, but he just doesn’t understand how to not be a jerk. I really don’t think he’s trying to fight the others, he just really thinks that a whole body tackle is an appropriate form of interaction, and not just with cats. He’s affectionate once he gets to know someone, but he’ll put holes in your clothes because he can’t learn he’s too big to climb people or jump on them.

I don’t know what to do with him. I’d hate for him to have to spend the rest of his life in a spare room, but with his issues, I can’t let him out, and I’ve been unable to find a home for him either.

I don’t suppose anyone has a magic solution?

    1. Connie says:
      January 29, 2015 at 4:06 pm

Lots and LOTs of play time.. wear that boy out at least twice a day. Praise the living daylights out of him when he is being ‘good’ and ignore him when he is being bad.. if you can’t ignore him simply put him on the ground with out saying anything or if you feel you have to say something either say ‘ow’ in a meow like fashion (if he hurt you) or a very disappointed tone.

Clicker training might also help him understand.. getting him to understand he can communicate is the key..

        Thank you, Connie!

I think it is hilarious that you hand-delivered these treats to each cat where they were, rather than having them mob you all at once in the kitchen! What good kitties!

    1. Robyn says:
      January 29, 2015 at 4:55 pm

I actually deliberately waited ’til they were all napping before I went around – it was a lot easier to get pictures of all of them!

  16. Connie says:
    January 29, 2015 at 4:02 pm

Alice certainly has the ‘come hither’ look going on there doesn’t she, and darn it if Dennis isn’t freakin awesome..

and why am I not surprised that Stefan couldn’t be bothered to stand up..

    1. Robyn says:
      January 29, 2015 at 4:55 pm

      He was EXHAUSTED from napping!

And Garfunkel is just too sweet… I mean, really ๐Ÿ™‚

My newest guy, Pip, does Garfunkel’s move — pawing at and pulling my hand toward his head as he leans in for the rub. I’ve never seen a cat do this, and yes, it is insanely cute.
