So the story is this: I got up to check on Lilia and the kittens yesterday around 4 am, and while I was sitting in there petting her, she started having contractions. She had them about every 10 minutes – I was expecting a kitten, but then the contractions stopped, and she dozed off. I didn’t want to take a chance, so got her (and the kittens) to the vet shortly after they opened. I dropped them off – they were going to work her in between other appointments – and headed home. Michelle called when I was about halfway back home. Lilia had two kittens still inside her, and they were going to do a c-section and spay her while they were at it.
They did the c-section and found that one kitten had already died, and the other died a few minutes later. (One was a buff tabby and the other was gray.) As soon as I got word she was out of surgery, I went back to pick them up.
Home again, I got Lilia settled (she came out of the carrier, sniffed the bowl of food, and went into the crate.) Then I fed her kittens and went to see if Lilia wanted them in with her. She was still glassy-eyed and dopey, but as soon as she saw the kittens, she started purring very loudly, and she chirped at them. She curled around them, and the whole family took a nap.
I went in every 2 hours to weigh the kittens and check on them, and they were almost always bellied up to the milk bar. Every time I weighed them, they had gained weight, which was good. Around mid-afternoon Lilia came out of the crate and ate the plate of canned food I’d left for her, and drank water. I took her in more canned food, and she ate that too.
I was VERY glad to see her eating and drinking. By early evening, her eyes were clearer and she was moving around comfortably. I would say we’re not necessarily out of the woods yet, but it’s a good start.
Hopefully today I’ll get a chance to figure out for sure what we’ve got for girls and boys, and get them named. (A good picture of each of them would be nice too, but let’s not go crazy.)
There will be dabs of fingernail polish on ears in the near future. (Not to complain, but I DID request a variety pack. I’d like to speak to the manager, please.)
Their fur is so glossy and shiny and I fear that I will never get a decent picture of any of them.
Here are some terrible pictures of each of the kittens, in order of their birth.
(Okay, this is a pretty good picture.) I think M (gray and white) is a girl, but will confirm before naming.
N (black with white feet and a white chin) is a boy (I think.)
O (all black, and what a terrible picture this is) is a boy (I think.)
And P (all black), who is the smallest kitten, has the longest toes I’ve ever seen on a kitten. She (I think she’s a girl) must be half spider monkey.

“You talkin’ to me?” asks Sebastian.
I was looking ALL OVER for Margarita and couldn’t find her, so I was calling and calling for her. Then I turned my head and she was looking at me like this. (And then I squooshed her.)
Benji likes to rearrange the bath mat.
Sebastian, Margarita and Benji are having a blast – now that it’s just the three of them, they get to have the run of the entire house during the day (they go back into the foster room at night). Yesterday, while I was focused on Lilia and her kittens, Margarita apparently spent a good part of the day following Charlie around and alternately flirting with him and hissing at him. Benji spent a lot of time crying “I’m lost! I’m alone! Where is everyone?!” in the middle of the living room. And Sebastian just stomped around and did important Sebastian things. He’s a busy, busy boy.

Charlie in the foster room. He really fills that crown bed, doesn’t he?

Posted on social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/ Bluesky) yesterday.
Lilia had unproductive contractions early this morning. Wanting to be safe, I took her to the vet – surprise, surprise, there were still two kittens left inside. They’re doing a c-section now, and will let me know when I can pick her – and them – up. (This picture is from before I took her to the vet.)
NOTE: This is NOT a current picture of Lilia, it’s from last night. She’s looking pretty rough right now.
Lilia is home. Unfortunately, the two kittens still inside her did not survive birth (one had already passed, one passed shortly after.) She is resting comfortably and her kittens are in with her. I’m monitoring their weights and supplement feeding as necessary.
This toy gives Margarita the crazy eyes. (Everything gives Margarita the crazy eyes.)
Everyone is doing really well – Lilia has been eating and drinking water. Every time I weigh the kittens, they’ve gained weight, so I haven’t had to supplement since this morning. I’m not saying we might not have a few rough days ahead, but I am pleased with how it’s going so far.
Good night innernets. (Margarita)

2005: For the most part Mister Boogers left the kittens alone, though Oy kept going over and sniffing at him, and he could hardly stand it, and he would growl and raise his paw to smack that kitten across the room, but then I would say “Mis. Ter. Boog. Ers.” in my Mean Lady voice, and he’d put his paw back down and walk away.
Aww! I’m so sorry to hear about the remaining 2 kittens who passed. Glad to hear the others are doing well though.
So relieved that Lilia is coming through her c-section strong and feeling better.
Cats having c-sections make me nervous!
Robyn, I am so sorry, both about the two kittens who didn’t survive, poor little teenies, and about saying what I said in yesterday’s comments! Why I even mentioned Natalie… I was writing from a place of relief that probably wound up reading like a complete clanger. Myapologies!
So very glad Lilia and the tiny quartet are doing well. <3
There’s no need at all to apologize, Chanter – Natalie’s been on my mind a lot recently, I think a lot of people have been thinking about her.
Black with white feet and chin! I have had three kitties (all girls — Charlotte, Dolly, and Allie) with those markings! I’ve been thinking Teddy needs a friend……
Robyn, you are literally a lifesaver, getting Lilia to the vet when you did. Poor little mites that didn’t make it … but the other kittens still have their mama thanks to you.
In that first picture, the t-i-n-y little paw stretched up in front of Lilia’s back leg — !!! Beyond cute.
Sad about the two that didn’t survive, but so glad that Mama and the four (three kittens + one half spider monkey!) seem to be doing ok now.
