Re: metal litter pans. I have covered boxes because Shylo is a high peer but I was having trouble with pee getting forced between the pan and the lid and onto the floor! So I bought some metal trays, basically cooking sheets, to put under the boxes. And the pee that gets on them is etching them, probably from the acidity in the urine. Is that going to be a problem with metal litter pans?

That is a really good question – and the answer is I don’t know! I haven’t noticed an issue yet, and my suspicion is that since the urine that comes into contact with the metal litter boxes is pretty quickly absorbed by litter, it might not be a problem. But if anyone out there has more experience or even thoughts on the topic, please feel free to chime in.

Is Bash within the weight and growth pattern for a kitten his age? I know nothing about kittens and you’ve never had any with this age difference before that I remember since I started following you in 2021. He is truly adorable and I m rooting for him to grow up big and strong.

He is within the normal range for weight – he’s 1.75 pounds at almost 7 weeks, and the general rule of thumb (though usually my kittens blow right past this guideline when they start eating on their own) is that they’ll weigh 3 – 4 ounces at birth and then gain 4 ounces each week. He was underweight when I got him (less than 3 ounces at 5 days old, and very skinny), but now he’s right where he should be. He seems so much smaller and slower than the bigger kittens because there’s such an age gap; the closest in age to him is Margarita, who is 10 weeks old. Nigel & Hazel are 11 weeks old, and Monty, Matilda and Benji are 12 weeks old. That’s a pretty big age gap, though he’s doing his best to catch up!

Matilda in the sun, being cute (as she does.)

Monty in my lap, being sweet (as he does.)

Y’know, not quite sure what’s going on here, and not quite sure I WANNA know. Let’s just move along…

Sebastian needs a nap.

Margarita’s all “What is THAT?!”

I have no idea why, but they always act guilty when they’re hanging out on the shelves/beds on the wall, like they think they’re doing something they shouldn’t.

See? Guilty! They’re there for you, ya little weirdos.

Benji checks out the view.

Hazel the little poser.

Monty on the lower shelf, Nigel on the curvy shelf.

Monty says “Move over! I wanna get up there!”
And Nigel says “No! There’s no room for you!”

In lieu of a permanent resident pic, please admire these random outdoor shots.

Male Bluebird and one of his kids.

Happy bee on the catnip.

We have three raised beds in the back yard. The bed to the far right holds 6 tomato plants. The bed in the middle has two tomato plants, a jalapeno, and cucumbers. The bed to the left is all flowers, and I overplanted it horribly and did not thin the plants as I should have. Come mid-summer, that bed is not going to be happy, I fear. (And yet do you see me out there thinning the plants? You do not. Don’t wanna, not gonna. We’ll just see what happens.)

Zinnias blooming.

I wish the tomatoes would hurry up and ripen already.

Purslane. Fun fact: purslane is edible, and one year when we lived at Crooked Acres, I had an entire raised bed planted with purslane. It’s good fresh on salads, and also good sauteed with onions. And BOY does it grow like crazy. Also: pretty!

Gardenias blooming, and they smell amazing.

I have no idea what this flower is – it is part of a wildflower mix I have growing in a pot – but it’s certainly pretty.

A Matilda latte and a banana for breakfast? Purrfect start to the day!

Sebastian’s all “Paws UP, y’all!”

Happy Thlurrrpsday, from Margarita.

Benji shows off his lick-lick-CHOMP skills.

I’m not entirely sure what Hazel is trying to accomplish here, but you go on with your silly self, ya goofy girl.

Good night innernets. (Benji)

Great pics today. Your flowers are so pretty. The photo of the purslane made me remember Purslane the kitten.
Also, re the metal pee pans, maybe if the pee is too acid you could put a base layer as a buffer like baking soda under the litter. No experience and not an expert-just a thought.

I think the perennial favorite Stompers (https://www.love-and-hisses.com/6-18-12/) had a similar differential in size with his Tater siblings, and look how awesome that turned out!

I think your mystery yellow flower might be some variety of Coreopsis.

Love your yard! And what is the thing hanging below the two bluebirds? It looks like a highly decorated colander.

I had stainless steel litter pans for many years with no problems. The conversations here are using “metal,” so I don’t know if it’s just any metal or is actually stainless steel.

They were expensive, but were so easy to clean, never kept odors or stains, and lasted, so were very well worth it.

Re. the shelves/beds on the wall — well whether those kittens feel guilty or not, that is one fantastic set up. I guess we all remember when there were just… walls there; how weird was THAT, in retrospect?!? Hahaha. Just kidding. I never thought those walls were lacking — until everything changed when those lovely shelves/beds went up (I say “went up”, as if they magically just floated up and landed there), and now the room is even more of a paradise for felines! 🙂
