Friends! Shelly needs advice! Got any?

Reaching out because if anyone knows, it is you (or your readers).

We are about to take in my 95 year old grandmother’s cat. She tripped over him yesterday, broke her hip and will no longer be able to care for him.

Gran’s cat is older and diabetic. He’s on a strict diet of a certain portion of wet food twice a day, no more/no less. My two cats are free feeders with both wet and dry kibble available always. Obviously we will introduce them slowly so feeding won’t be an immediate issue, but I’m not sure how to manage it once they are all out and about together.

Any advice?

Periwinkle (left, formerly Tater Tot) and Buzz.

I said: The only thing I can think of is to use feeders that work with their microchips – they are NOT cheap, though, and though I’ve heard of them I’ve never actually tried using one. That’s the sort of thing you’d have to just try and see how it went.

I guess another option (this depends on you having a spare room) would be to put a cat door in the door of a spare room that works with microchips, then set it to work with Buzz & Periwinkle’s microchips, so they could go in and out and eat at will, while the new guy couldn’t go in at all.

I KNOW you guys have suggestions, though. Please chime in!

Calliope has started taking part in Churu Time!

They’re all always pretty excited about Churu Time, but Wonton is far and away the MOST excited.

Those are his paws wrapped around the Churu tube.

He always gets it all over his face. A little snack for later!

Khinkali says “Hey, gimme some of that!”

Calliope’s all “This is where the Churu goes, lady.”

Pierogi and Momos aren’t in these pictures because they don’t like when it’s crowded, and they get their Churu on the floor, where they sit at my feet and meow politely.

Pierogi pie! (My favorite!)

Momos looks so grown up here, but I assure you she’s still a little one at about 3 1/2 pounds/1.58 KG.

You’ll note that there’s a plate of food on the floor, but Pierogi and Khinkali are far more interested in what Calliope’s eating up on the counter. (The EXACT same food, is what.)

My boys. (There will be no fat shaming of Charlie, please.)

It’s a rough life, Magoo.

Looking at those ears, I’m starting to think Wonton’s daddy must’ve been a Fennec Fox. Did you know he’s still available for adoption? True story! Read his description below and email Forgotten Felines at INFO (at) FFHSV.ORG to inquire, or fill out an application here.

WONTON (male, DOB 2-26-26) is the SWEETEST little guy who has an instant purr and will sit in your lap to be petted for a good long cuddle. He doesn’t mind being kissed – in fact, he’s one laid-back dude who doesn’t mind being kissed a LOT. But don’t mistake his mild manner for weakness – he might be the smallest of his litter, but he doesn’t mind leaping on the nearest sibling to tussle, and he holds his own very well. He loves it when you toss toys for him, will chase a ping pong ball, enjoys batting rattly mice around, and will bunny-kick a stuffed toy until it begs for mercy. He especially likes feather teasers, and if you wave for one he will jump higher than you’d ever expect. He gets along great with other cats and would be fine with cat-friendly dogs. He MUST be in a home with another cat to play (and cuddle) with. If you’re looking for a pair, his siblings Pierogi and Tortellini are still available, and they get along great. He’s going to be neutered on June 2nd and will be ready to go home a few days later (or stay here for a while longer if need be).

We are located in the Huntsville, Alabama area. Forgotten Felines does adopt out of the area but adopters must come here to complete the adoption because Wonton is easily distracted, tends to drive too slowly, and just cannot be trusted behind the wheel. Email Forgotten Felines at INFO (at) FFHSV.ORG, or fill out an online application here.

Throw Back Thursday: the Hopalong Gang in 2024 really liked that whale bed!

Tortellini’s chasing her tail, and Wonton and Pierogi are having a SERIOUS tussle.

Pierogi says “Hi, hi! I am still available for adoption, isn’t that SHOCKING?” SO shocking! Read his description below and email Forgotten Felines at INFO (at) FFHSV.ORG to inquire, or fill out an application here.

PIEROGI (male – DOB 2-26-26) is a silly, sweet chatty boy who will greet you at the door, inform you that he is STARVING and then race off to play while you’re getting food for him (but don’t worry, he’ll be back to gulp down his food before he races off again.) He is one energetic, playful boy who is nearly constantly on the go and loves to RUN! JUMP! and POUNCE! on his siblings. He rarely slows down, but when he does he might allow a cuddle or two (he’s not sure about being kissed, but we’re working on it.) He – did we mention? – is super playful; his favorite toys are ping pong balls, felted balls, and toys with feathers attached (they might not have feathers attached when he’s done with them, though.) He gets along great with other cats and would be fine with cat-friendly dogs. He MUST be in a home with another cat to play (and cuddle) with – if you’re looking for a pair, his siblings Wonton and Tortellini are still available, and he gets along great with them. He’s going to be neutered on June 2nd and can go home a few days later (or stay here for a while longer if need be).

We are located in the Huntsville, Alabama area. Forgotten Felines does adopt out of the area but adopters must come here to complete the adoption because Pierogi is a terrible driver and they pulled his license after his 15th speeding ticket (boy’s got a lead foot and refuses to use his turn signal), so he cannot drive himself. Email Forgotten Felines at INFO (at) FFHSV.ORG, or fill out an online application here.

The kittens are playing like crazy things and end up annoying Calliope – who comes and climbs into my lap where she’s safe from rotten kittens.

Calliope’s appetite is VORACIOUS right now and she spends a lot of time on the desk looking at me with the hopeful eyes.

YouTube link
You’ll be pleased to hear that Pierogi still LOVES his catnip green bean toy! (And yes, it will go home with him when he gets adopted!)

Good night innernets. (Tortellini … who is somehow still available for adoption! Read her description below and email Forgotten Felines at INFO (at) FFHSV.ORG to inquire, or fill out an application here. )

TORTELLINI (female – DOB 2-22-26) has the most suspicious little face, but underneath it all, she’s a sweet little lovebug (and very very soft!) You don’t pick up Tortellini and put her in your lap – you sit your behind down and WAIT for her to come to you… and come to you she does. She can’t help it, because as much as she wants to deny it, she’s a lover. She loves being petted, she loves (we think?) being kissed, she loves snuggling with her siblings and she loves kicking their butts. She’s just full of love! When she’s not snuggling, she is SO playful. Jumping! Playing! Racing at full speed from one side of the room to the other! The girl can MOVE, and she loves it even more when her siblings chase her (or she chases them.) Just when you think she can’t possibly have THAT much energy, she comes over and climbs into your lap for a cuddle to recharge before she’s off again. She loves (and will chase) any toy you toss for her, and has a special fondness for ping pong balls, felted balls, and rattly mice. She MUST be in a home with another cat to play and cuddle with. If you’re looking for a pair, her siblings Pierogi and Wonton are still available, and she gets along great with them. She’ll be spayed on June 2nd and will be ready to go home a few days later (or stay here for a while longer if need be.)

We are located in the Huntsville, Alabama area. Forgotten Felines does adopt out of the area but adopters must come here to complete the adoption because Tortellini refuses to listen to the GPS (she argues with it and then she calls it names. It’s all very distressing.) Email Forgotten Felines at INFO (at) FFHSV.ORG, or fill out an online application here.

Microchip feeders are sanity savers!! Food is only accessible by the assigned kitties, food stays fresh longer, easier to monitor eating habits and changes. I use Surefeed brand, there several others out there, dry food dispensers too.
If you need even more separation and have space for it you can build individual “dining rooms”. Using base cabinets, one for each kitty with a microchip kitty flap in the door. Use clear plexiglass for a top with hinges so they have light and you get in there easier for cleaning.

Fitzcapades on Instagram recently had a post about using microchip feeders for two cats with different food requirements.

Hi Robyn, I’m just a little concerned about sweet calico Momos. I noticed you re-posted invitations for adopters for Pierogi, Wonton and Tortellini, but not for her. I also noticed you suggested the other 3 as prospective adoption mates for each other, but again didn’t mention Momos. I do hope this doesn’t mean there is a problem with her, such as health issues. Any reassurance you can provide would be very welcome. Hoping and praying that all 4 of them will soon find loving forever homes.

There are multiple applications on Momos and I’m waiting to hear whether any have been approved.

Oh that’s wonderful news – a happy reason why she’s not been mentioned in the recent adoption invitations! Looking forward to hearing more when there’s definite good news.

I have 3 kitties and bought the Sure Pet microchip feeders for each of them. Expensive, yes, worth it, also yes! One of my kitties is on a prescription food diet so that makes it so much easier! The Sure Feed brand is the only one I found that works with either the microchip in the cat, if they have one, or a microchip tag, included, that they wear on a collar. My kitties, who are exclusively indoor, hated wearing collars, so that was a big selling point for me.

If buying Sure Pet feeders, I would recommend buying from Chewy as they have a 365 day return policy, in case they aren’t the right solution. Also Chewy runs specials where you get a $30 gift card with a $100 or more purchase. Did I order all three of my feeders separately to get that deal 3X…..you bet I did!

Microchip feeders are the way to go! I have three cats. One is on prescription food, one needs portion control, and the other has no restrictions. The microchip feeders make it easy to control who gets what food and how much. I’ve had the Surefeed brand for over a decade and they have held up really well. They are worth the investment.

I have 3 young cats who can eat anything and an older cat on a special diet for her kidneys. I bought a wooden folding “gate” that forms into a V, and have her feeding area in a corner. I put her bowl down first, arrange the gate around her, then feed the other 3. Have to watch, because occasionally one of the youngsters will try to push in. But most of the time it works.

I’m in total agreement with the microchip feeders – all three of my cats have them now, after I had a rescue cat a long time ago who was a scavenger. My three current young ones got the hang of how to make it open really quickly, although the shy one didn’t much like the sound (she tolerates it now), so my advice for an older cat would just be to go really slowly on the ‘training mode’ to make sure the cat really understands how to get at the food.

Sounds like that one particular brand of microchip readers is the perfect solution. How very kind of them to take in the cat and to be willing to go the extra mile to make it work.

I use SureFeed microchip feeders for my trio; however another option that can read microchips if for some reason they don’t take to the feeders is MeowSpace (I’ve never used one myself though so can’t comment beyond that): https://meowspace.biz/
