Time to let me know if you want a holiday card, with this year’s featured Crooked Acre permanent resident! Go here to Postable, enter your name and address, and your card will be on the way soon. I am happy to send cards to other countries, this is NOT limited to U.S. residents. If you have any problems, drop me an email and I’ll do my best to fix it. I’ll take names and addresses until December 20th.

If you’d like to send me a card as well (never ever required, but always appreciated – I don’t keep track of who does or doesn’t send a card, I promise!), send it to:

(PS: If that link doesn’t work for you, or you prefer not to enter your info (I delete your name and address once I’ve downloaded it), you can email me instead.)

The first pic of Drum with M’Lynn looks like his tail is about a mile long!

I just spent a long time staring at that picture and zooming in, and I am relatively certain that Ouiser was lying in the tube next to him, and that’s her tail hanging out. He has a perfectly good tail, but it’s not really THAT long.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
does Drum show signs of floofiness?
He seems to be slightly floofy, I don’t think he’ll end up as a medium- or long-hair, just kind of floofy for a shorthair. (I would be perfectly fine if he proved me wrong, but usually floofy kittens are floofier by this age.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I know the kittens usually don’t care when mamma goes off to her furever home, but given that it was just the two of them for a long time, and that she’s just so dang tiny (and soooo adorable!!!), do you think Shelby might be an exception to the rule when M’lynn leaves?

I think Shelby’s going to be fine – she actually spends less time with her mother than the other kittens do at this point.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had heard of kittens with fever coats (maybe from you?) but assumed they would be born with them, rather than develop them. So interesting!
I think that often they are born with them, but last year Mike developed a fever coat a week or two after I got him, and it was gone by the time he was adopted. It makes me wonder if it’s possible that when the fever coat shows up depends on during which stage of gestation the mother was under stress/had a fever – if it happens later in the pregnancy, then maybe the kitten doesn’t show the fever coat until s/he’s a bit older? That’s complete and utter supposition on my part, of course, and there’s not a lot of rock-solid research-backed information available anywhere that I’ve been able to find.
What determines whether or not a foster becomes a permanent resident. You said Shelby won’t be one, so i wondered. I absolutely love her.
It starts with having a desire to add a permanent resident to the household. Beyond that, it depends on whether they’re a good fit with the other cats.
We have zero desire to add another permanent resident to the house – adding one kitten really means adding two (we can’t count on Charlie being willing to play with a kitten, and kittens need age-appropriate friends) and we are not ready for that. Honestly, having lost three permanent residents this year, I don’t EVER want to add another permanent resident. (I’m sure some day I’ll change my mind, but at this point I cannot imagine it.)
I only specifically mentioned that Shelby would not be becoming a permanent resident because the “yoU ShOULD maKE sHELBY A pErMAnent ResIDENT” comments have been particularly abundant recently. I usually completely ignore those comments (to explain why so-and-so would not be becoming a permanent resident has often, in the past, led to people explaining to me how I’m incorrect, which I am sure you can imagine I find so delightful) but like I said – every 3rd comment on Facebook lately has been about whether I’m keeping her, so I thought I’d address it. (Of course, with Facebook’s algorithm being what it is, probably ZERO of the people asking have seen my response so, y’know. THANKS, FACEBOOK.)
Where is Shelby’s frog with the big eyes? I keep looking for it.
The bed? It’s on the floor in front of the couch. After hanging out in it for a couple of days, Shelby is now ignoring it (which is the way it goes, I’ve found. Love it one day, never heard of it the next.) Or did you mean Mister Frog, the stuffed long-legged frog? That’s kicking around here somewhere – I haven’t seen her playing with it, but it seems to be moving around the room so SOMEONE is (I suspect Drum.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of Charlie and the pile of blankets at the end of the bed, I’m curious about the stack of cat beds at the end of the sofa that he loved so much when he was Aramis. Did they get moved to the perm res side of the house or did the beds disappear into the fosterverse over time?

Charlie in 2020 – left in July (I think) and right in December.

When we moved to this house, the pile of beds went to live in a corner of Fred’s office, Charlie slept in them for a while, and then he just… moved on. The pile stayed in a corner of Fred’s office for over a year, and Charlie never went back to them. I moved them several times – into a corner of my room, into my office, and on the end of my bed, and Charlie was uninterested, so I guess he’s decided he’s a big boy now. (I am not entirely sure he’d even fit in those beds anymore, not that that would ever stop him.)

Haaave you seen Drum’s toeses? They are delightful.

Ouiser has a sleepy.

Clairee wonders if there’s a kiss coming her way. (Yes INDEED.)

Getting a wee bit of an attitude from wee Shelby.

Someone knocked on the door downstairs, and M’Lynn was like “Is that for me?”

“Tell those kittens to stop hanging out on the windowsill and getting the window all smudged. It’s ANNOYING.”

Ouiser’s all “We gotta go where the sun is!”

Charlie, Khal and Newt spend their days snoozing on Fred’s bed like the slackers they are.

Posted on social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr) yesterday.

The kittens got a new-to-them tunnel (it’s been in the closet since last year), and they like it quite a bit (it travels around the foster room a LOT.) (Shelby)

Former foster update! Maggie, from 2011 (she came to us pregnant and gave birth to 6 kittens of her own… and eventually took on the care of three orphaned kittens as well.) Here is that sweet girl these days!

Alex says: I just wanted to let you know how everyone’s favorite mama cat is doing. First of all, Maggie went to the vet recently and a blood panel revealed she is still super healthy minus some allergies, which she got treated for. She continues to be terrorized by two 1 year old kittens. I kid; they mostly let her be; though every once in a while, I witness her being playfully attacked by Pack. But I also find them snuggling from time to time. Overall, Maggie continues to be well loved and still is my little lap cat. She sends her love.

I just love seeing that sweet face! (Thanks, Alex!)

While Shelby sleeps off a food coma, I’m tossing toys for the other kittens.

When M’Lynn hears something going on downstairs, she will go over and look at the mirror next to the door like it’s a window, and it cracks me UP.

Shelby has a purrrrr.

Drum, hanging out in the top of the tall cat tree, keeping an eye on things. He is SO pretty!

Good night innernets. (From left: M’Lynn, Drum, Ouiser, Shelby and Clairee.)
