I am so very sorry to tell you that yesterday, we said goodbye to Martini.
He wasn’t acting right, and it was nothing I could put my finger on. He wasn’t playing, just would lie around and sleep most of the time. He did greet me at the door with the other kittens, tail up and purring, and he was eating well. But something was just… off.
We had a drop-off vet appointment for him yesterday morning, and when I walked into the room to get him, he was sleeping on the floor next to a puddle of urine. He woke, stood up, and walked toward me and just looked really rough. I immediately got him to the vet.
His bloodwork was wonky and while they could tell that there was something going on, the bloodwork was a mystery rather than a clear answer.
They did the best they could, but by early afternoon it was clear that he wasn’t going to pull out of it, and so the decision was made to let him go.
While I’m not NOT worried about his siblings (Rum, Fizz, Mimosa & Spritz are blood relations to him), I’m also not overly concerned about them. They’re all acting like they feel fine – they’re playing a lot, eating, interacting – but I will obviously keep a very close eye on them.

Posted on social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Tumblr/ Bluesky) yesterday.

Meet the new fosters, a thrown-together litter (not all related) of 8 kittens, who are all around 6 months old. They’ve got some upper respiratory crud going on (which we’re treating them for), so they look and sound a little rough.
Pardon my unfocused rambling. I’m going to try to get short clips of each kitten and put them together for a more focused video to post later, so you can tell easier who’s who.
Sorry about the abrupt ending to the video – my stomach WOULD NOT STOP GROWLING and it was annoying me.

When I tell you this silly boy (Rum) is possibly the happiest kitten I’ve ever met, I kid you not. He constantly purrs, he plays, he loves to be petted and snuggled. He’s such a little clown!

Whiskey has such PRETTY markings! I’m gonna make him love me even if I have to buy his love with 10,000 Churu, oh yes I am.

Meet the new fosters, take two. I got a short clip of each kitten, so this is less rambly and (perhaps) more cohesive than the rambly video from earlier. At least I like to think so. 🙂

Reese says “You may pet me, lady. Then I’ve got things to do, so make it snappy.”

Dinner is served! Back row, from left: Fizz, Whiskey, Reese, Spritz, Mimosa. Front, from left: Rum & Martini. (Reverb was in his donut; I took a plate of food to him to be sure he ate.)

🎉It’s former foster Crumpet! Geeta says: “She drags her play mat near the tree and goes savage.” These pictures are cracking me UP. She is such a little nut! 😆 (Thanks Geeta!)

Good night innernets. (Spritz (left) and Fizz)

I’m so sorry to hear about Martini. It’s just a crappy reminder that even though they made it to 6 months, they’re never really too far from danger. Illness in a young one is always dicey.
Much love and good wishes to the rest of the newbies. Hopefully, Reverb doesn’t have what Martini did.
Oh, and by the way, Happy Holidays to you, Fred and your clowder!
((hugs)) So sorry for the loss of Martini.
So sorry Robyn and Fred.
I honestly don’t know what’s going on, this is the second condolences I’ve offered on Facebook today and I am only on Facebook long enough to have read the two sad news and write.
Take care both of you and all the rest of this beautiful gang. Xx
I’m so sorry about Martini. It’s always so sad to lose any cat, never mind one so young. I’m just glad he was being loved and cared for before he passed away. He was in the best possible situation, thank you for being so attentive to this little boy and helping him. Sending the other kittens love and good health. xxx
I am so sorry about Martini. 🙁 He was absolutely loved and knew it – the tail up and purring greetings are no small thing. Poor sweet kitten boy.
Aww man…I’m so sorry! Fly free little Martini!
You did the best you could for Martini. He knew he was much loved by you, sweet Robyn.
Oh no! Poor little guy. I’m so sorry. A reminder that kittens can be so fragile, even at 6 mos
Dear Robyn, I’m so sorry that you have had to experience the heartache of the sudden and unexpected loss of this lovely little one, so soon after his arrival in your loving home. Although he was with you for so short a time he obviously felt secure and happy and loved in his new surroundings. Your observant eye and sensitive heart spotted that something wasn’t quite right, and you did everything for him you possibly could. Little Martini was obviously just not meant for this world, but you and everyone at Forgotten Felines did all that you could to surround him with loving care. God bless you once again for accepting the the vulnerability that comes with opening your heart and home to all the precious kitties entrusted to you. Martini now has his Furever Home in the Lord’s own Heart. And I pray that your heart will be blessed with fresh joy in watching all his playmates flourishing in your wonderful loving care.
So sorry about little Martini.
I am so sorry to hear about little Martini.
This sounds very sudden and I’m glad that he was surrounded by people who loved and cared for him so much.
Oh, I’m so sorry about Martini! Sweet boy. You had him such a short time but at least he got to experience such care and love that I know you gave him. Safe journey little one.
I’m so sorry about little Martini. At least he knew love and care in his last days. Sending hugs to you and all the kittens. In a mystery case like Martini’s, does the vet do a necropsy to try to determine what possibly was the cause of his illness?
Robyn,
I’m so sorry about Martini. Thank goodness he was in good hands, got the best possible chance, and didn’t suffer. May the rest of the group continue with good health and lots of shenanigans to distract you.
Merry Christmas to you, Fred, all of your resident felines, and your readers.
{{Tears and hugs}} So sorry to hear about Martini passing so soon after you took him and his clowder in.
Wishing the rest of you a merry holiday season.
