8-6-11 – Meet The Peppers

The question-answering entry I’d planned for Friday, before the internet went down for a day and a half, will be up on Monday. But so that you don’t have to wait to meet the new guys….

Here they are. I’ll introduce them to you one by one in Monday’s entry, but here’s the whole group for now.

2011-08-06 (1)
There are five of them, obviously.

2011-08-06 (3)
The silver tabby is a girl, the brown tabby is a boy, and there’s one black boy and two black girls. I’m going to get collars for the black girls so I can tell them apart (and the boy will be identifiable due to the fact that he won’t be wearing a collar). Though, I can kind of tell the girls apart because one of them is ever so slightly cross-eyed (that’s her on the far right).

2011-08-06 (4)
They’re eight weeks old tomorrow. They were hissy-spitty when I first got them, but they’re starting to calm down. The black boy is a talker. The silver tabby is a feisty little thing.

2011-08-06 (5)
A pregnant cat showed up on a man’s doorstep. He fed her, and then when he realized she was pregnant, he brought her inside. She gave birth to these five kittens and he’s been caring for them. But he was about to go for neck surgery and wasn’t going to be able to continue caring for them all, so through a friend of a friend, they came to Challenger’s House. (He’s going to keep the mom.)

2011-08-06 (6)
Since Ciara and the Spice Girls are ready to go when room becomes available at Petsmart, I decided we had room for these guys!

I’ll let y’all ponder what their individual names might be, but I can tell you that they’re not named after types of peppers (Bell, Ghost, Habanero would be good kitten names, though) and they’re actually not really named after anyone in particular (well, kind of, but I’ll explain that to you when I introduce them properly).

As you can tell, Ciara, Clove, Coriander, and Cilantro are super-worried that they can’t get into that guest bedroom!

Actually, for the first day or so, they sat outside the guest bedroom, all “Why can’t we go in there? Why do you hate us? Whyyyyyy?”, but after a few days they seem to have forgotten that the guest bedroom is there (though if I spend too much time in the room with the little ones, I open the door to find seven cats sitting in the hallway waiting for me to come out!)

YOu know, I have never heard that before! Maybe it’s an american thing? A vaudeville routine? Or my sheltered upbringing? Cute but!

It may just be an American thing. It is from an old Dr. Pepper (soda) commercial – about 1978ish.

What a nice man! And to top it off, he’s gonna keep the Mama! I love it when people adopt adult kitties. Warms my little furry heart. <3

The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew! I loved that book when I was a kid, and it was old even then. They are cute and happy the man is keeping the Momma cat.

Oh good heavens, this litter is making me ask you a question I’ve never asked before: How long do you think the drive is from New Jersey to Alabama?

~15 hours from Newark to Huntsville! Google Maps is your friend! πŸ™‚

Firstly, thank you for hosting these little ones. Your work is wonderful and is an inspiration to all who pass through here.
Second, that beautiful photos! I love coming here because I relax, I am moved and laugh so much.
And third, is also here at home so when I rescued cats. The “cats house” are always trying to figure out what’s in the guest room that they can not enter!
    A big hug!

AWWWW new keeteens! *pets them all* Hi teeny kitties. Hmmm… what will your names be, I wonder? Although pepper names would be wonderful, I have to admit. A silver tabby named Ghost Pepper, heh, perfect! πŸ™‚ What a wonderful man that momkitty found, and yay! that he’s going to keep her! I’m another one who loves it when people adopt adult kitties. πŸ™‚ As cute as the teeny kittens are, I gravitate toward the older cats myself.

You know, with Ciara’s name starting with the same letter as all the Spices, a person could be forgiven for thinking she’s a fourth sister, couldn’t they? πŸ™‚ Awww.

Now I’m trying to imagine which seven cats are usually waiting outside the guest bedroom when you’ve been in there. The Spices and Ciara, the Blues Brothers, and… Stinkerbell?

Heh – I don’t actually know how many cats are outside the door, I just picked a number out of the air. Not really more then four or five, probably – the Spice Girls, Ciara, and Elwood, who knows there’s kitten food in there and wants to get him some! πŸ™‚

oh my gosh, I’ve been trying to convince my niece that Habanero is a perfect name for her baby Degu! (that’s a rodent from Chili) I think it’s brother should be Wasabi, because it’s also hot, and fun to say, lol!
Can’t wait to see the kitten’s names! They’re adorable! So glad momma has a home too!!

    1. GD says:
      August 8, 2011 at 5:45 am

Ok, I had to look up a Degu… flipp’n cute!
      http://www.google.com/search?q=Degu&hl=en&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=DL4_TrCbKcKWtwecmsXtAg&ved=0CDAQsAQ&biw=1420&bih=742

    2. GD says:
      August 8, 2011 at 5:50 am

Oh, does she know this? (This is what happens when I start to google…LOL):

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of degu physiology is their intolerance of dietary sugar. Degus have been found to have a divergent insulin structure (one of the hormones that regulates blood glucose level) and so are highly susceptible to developing diabetes mellitus when fed regularly on a diet containing free sugars.[27] This is thought to be due to evolutionary pressure arising from the lack of availability of free sugars in the degu’s natural environment.[28] Because of this it is important to check the ingredients of non-degu specific hard feed formulations for free-sugar substances, such as molasses, honey and glucose syrup.

What a great group of newbies. Could the brown-tabby boy be right up there with young Corbie on the beauty front? I, too, love the fact that their first guardian is keeping the mummy. And Spice Girls and Ciara, do try to relax!

  18. Kar says:
    August 6, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Well, obviously the silver has to be “Ghost.” The other little girl has to be “Bell(e)” pepper.

The talker boy could be Tabasco and then you’d have Poblano (for the loungy type) and Pasilla for the other black kitty.

Oh, you dropped a hint in an earlier post about ‘not being able to get in the guest room’, I was wondering then, but forgot! Til’ now.
And my beloved late Grandma read us a book about some little Peppers…is one of the kittens named Phronsie, by any chance?? I’d have to go get my copy to remember the rest of them!
What fun! So glad your internet is back, too.
